Abstract
In this year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, we particularly remember Laurie Fitzhardinge who first pushed for the establishment of an Australian biographical dictionary unit at the ANZAAS Conference in 1951 and started the ADB’s Biographical Register in the mid-1950s. We also include Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's speech on the important place of biography in telling our nation's history and republish Michael McKernan's infamous ADB-style entry about Australia's most famous horse, Phar Lap.
